THE BLUE POPPY-THAKALI is an extended place of our very own ‘The Blue Poppy’, where Blue Poppy is famous for Momos and other Tibetan dishes, Thakali is famous for Nepalese cuisine. I, being an ardent food lover, haven’t tasted good Nepali cuisine in Kolkata, but, now I know where to go to satiate my ‘Sel Roti’ cravings.
The decor of this place is very soothing, they have floor sitting arrangements along with chairs and tables which makes this place more cozier to sit, relax and have a good chit chat session with friends along with the drool-worthy food.
Nepalese cuisine has its own hilly charm in flavours, the dishes are light yet flavorsome and the spicier ones are for brave hearted only.
We visited in a group of four and took over the menu to have some of the authentic dishes which we do not gobble up in our everyday routine.
Lets see below what I am talking about:
PORK KOTHAY MOMOS:
Kothay momos are mix of steam and fried, where the underside is fried which gives the crispness and the upper part is steam and juicy, the minced pork filling was delicious and full of flavours.
PORK CHOLLA (NEPALI SMOKED PORK SALAD) : In one word if I can describe this, then it would be ‘Heavenly’. Tender cube pieces of pork meat and fat mixed well with onions and chillies, the smokey flavour was the absolute palate winner.
SUNGUR KO KHUTTO KA ACHAR (PICKED PORK TROTTERS) : This dish leaves a tangy and bit spicy taste, the gravy was extremely delicious, one can have it with breads or just as a starter.
SEL ROTI AND ALU DUM : Sel Roti is a traditional Nepali dish, it is a ring shaped bread which tastes mildly sweet. One can have it with any spicy sides like we opted for alu dum, or it can just be enjoyed solely without any sides also.
The alu dum was spicy but and so so good, the combination of sweet Sel Roti and spicy alu dum was just perfect.
BANANA NUTELLA CRISPY PANCAKE : Desserts can never go wrong and specially when Nutella is there. The pancake was crisp filled with bananas and topped with nutella, served hot and delicious.
Overall, our visit to this place was highly satisfactory, the staffs were courteous and helpful with the menu. I am going to visit soon for the love of Sel Roti and Pork Cholla.
